Open expeditions are an independent way to complete the expedition section of your DofE Award. They enable you to join other young people to complete a Gold or Silver expedition.
The agreement to take part lies between parent (if the participant is under 18 years old) and East Coast Outdoors CIC and is not a school trip or visit. Once you have booked your place we will make contact and when there are enough bookings to make a viable expedition, our staff arrange a ZOOM meeting to introduce themselves and the participants to each other (this in place of a "parents evening") giving opportunity for questions and an overview of what will happen.
We hold an AAP licence via the The Award Scheme. Joining an open expedition is a great option if you have been unable to complete your expedition with your own organisation.
We take responsibility for the whole expedition experience under our risk assessments and safe operating procedures. We pride ourselves on delivering high quality experiences from the point of drop off, until the last participant has been collected.

How will groups be formed?
As participants sign up they will be put into "bubbles" to walk together. If you are signing up with a friend let us know and we will "bubble" you in the same group.
Will I meet the group before the expedition takes place?
Yes - we organise ZOOM meetings before and between each expedition so you can meet your leaders, other participants and ask questions.
Where will I sleep?
Overnight accommodation will be provided in tents and will be shared between 2 participants.
Will I need to bring my own food?
Yes - you will need enough food for the duration of the expedition. Access to water is available on the site. Cookers will be shared between 2 participants. We will provide you with kit and food lists in good time before the expedition takes place.
Can I borrow kit?
Yes - we have stock of rucksacks, waterproofs and roll mats which we can provide free of charge (subject to satisfactory return) if required. Please let us know if you need to borrow anything in good time.
Will I need a pair of walking boots?
You need something appropriate to wear on your feet for the countryside your walking in. Walking boots are essential for Silver & Gold expeditions.
Will there be other people on the same site as us?
We use camping sites away from the general public where ever possible. Access to toilets and showers will be provided overnight.
How will I get my assessor report?
Your assessor will complete this and put it directly on your edofe account within 14 days.
How do I pay?
Once a completed booking is received you will asked to pay a deposit. The remaining balance is invoiced 28 days before each expedition. An email will be sent to you containing an invoice and payment details before your expedition is due to take place.
A copy of our Terms and Conditions will be sent at the point of booking.
