We will be hosting a virtual information meeting for Gold participants and parents on Tuesday 6th February 2024 at 7pm. Please get in touch if you would like to attend, no booking necessary.
It can seem a bit daunting booking onto an expedition where you might not know anyone, but try not to worry its also a great opportunity to flex your independence and join other young people taking part in a OPEN Gold Expedition. Lots of our previous participants have made long term friendships, and stay in touch after the expedition has completed.
Young people need to be over the age of 16 and enrolled onto the Award Scheme via eDofE. Once you have booked a spot, a £50 deposit* is payable at the point of booking with the remaining balance payable before the expedition takes place.
If you would like to pay in installments please let us know and we can arrange this. The balance still needs to be cleared before the expedition takes place.
*all out costs our subject to VAT
In preparation for the expedition, we organise a virtual participant event, with parents encouraged to join in the conversation. Its important that everyone has a good understanding of what to expect, how to prepare and whats going to happen when you turn up to a Gold Expedition.
Menu plans, kit lists, medical consent form and an itinerary are provided directly to each participant & parent well in advance of the expedition taking place.
You can always hire good quality personal kit (rucksack, sleeping bag, roll mat & waterproof clothing) directly from us to keep your costs down.
The cost per person covers qualified staff, training, camping fees, assessor reports and group kit. It does not cover, transport, food or personal kit.
Group kit includes;- Tents, Trangia's, Gas, Maps, Compasses, Group shelter, Survival Bags & additional First Aid supplies.
All our equipment is well maintained, repaired and turned around ready for use. We invest heavily in good quality gold standard lightweight equipment.
Each walking group will also be supplied with a GPS Locator to ensure participant safety and peace of mind for the parent or guardian.
The company carries appropriate Insurance, walking qualifications and an AALA Licence to carry out safe, remote and adventurous activities at Gold Level in mountainous terrain. Our expeditions take place in the Yorkshire Dales, Peak District and the Brecon Beacons.
Our Operations Director runs all Gold DofE Expeditions, and is a member of UIMLA (Union of the Mountain Leaders Association)
Please reach us at info@eastcoastoutdoors.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.
As participants sign-up on the website, they will be put into a walking group. If you are signing up with other people from your school or college, we will place you in the same group.
Once you have booked your spot we will raise a deposit invoice for £50, this will be sent directly to your parent, guardian or you if your paying for yourself. The remaining balance is due 28 days before your first expedition takes place.
YES - we are able to organise monthly installments, but remember that the balance is still due before the expedition takes place.
Practice undertaken some time ago - Some participants come back to their DofE programme after some time, looking to complete their expedition. The supervisor must decide if their practice expedition was too long ago to adequately evidence competence and must agree with the participant how they will prove they are capable of safely undertaking a qualifying expedition.
Please email bert@eastcoastoutdoors.co.uk to discuss.
Yes - we organise an MS Teams meeting before and between each expedition so you can meet your leaders, other participants and ask questions.
There is no need to worry, you are asked to include all medical conditions on the sign up form. Having a medical condition shouldn't be a barrier to taking part. We would encourage you to talk to someone before the expedition, just get in touch by phone or email.
YES - Walking boots are essential for Gold. We recommend you get properly fitted and "break in" boots before the expedition. Walking boots must have ankle support and lace up to the top of the boot.
Your assessor will complete this and put it directly on your edofe account within 14 working days.
We use remote camping sites away from the general public wherever possible. Access to toilets and showers will be provided overnight.
Yes - we have appropriate insurance to do this. Let us know you need a lift and we can arranged a named contact to collect you.
