Always with Young People in Mind
East Coast Outdoors was created in December 2018 by a group of experienced DofE volunteers, leaders and school staff, hoping to provide young people the opportunity to take part in a safe, challenging, and cost-effective Duke of Edinburgh expedition experience. The team work hard to keep its Community Interest Company roots, and offer back in a number of ways.
Offering back:
- Keeping costs low. Our price per head is low and we do that in a variety of ways to make sure that we cover our overheads and accept any economic challenges without having to pass these costs down to clients.
- Low cost personal kit hire for participants who book through a school or college.
- Free participation places to every client, every year. In 2022, we gave 75 free places to young people as part of our free participation place scheme.
- Making sure participants who struggle with medical, behavioural and social circumstances are included and supported to take part at every level. We are an inclusive provider.
- Fair pay for our staff. Working in an outdoor industry is not a lucrative career and we are keen to pay our freelance staff above average to take part in the expeditions we deliver. Our pay scales are reviewed yearly and check-in with what other providers are paying.
- Offering support to organisations and staff who want to run their own in-house expeditions and help to develop confidence and skills. We offer the Countryside Leaders Award.
